Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds

The Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) on the Pisa Range, in New Zealand's Cardrona Valley, not far from Queenstown or Wanaka.

It's the only proving ground in the Southern Hemisphere. Where I have had the pleasure of working in the past on logistics, safety, a medic, plus also as their company photographer.
The Proving Grounds is an award winning automotive proving ground located in the South Island of New Zealand, offering winter testing facilities for automotive, component and tyre manufacturers.

They have 16 private, land-based test areas. Which include; snow flats, ice flats, handling tracks, snow & Ice circles, an ice tunnel and more.

It's been a great place for photography, and have captured amazing alpine commercial imagery, as well as landscape imagery. The alpine environment is a stunning place to take photos but can also be tricky. Here’s a couple tips:

Shoot in raw format, white snow can be tricky. Setting your format to raw allows you to adjust your settings without being limited.

After taking photos, warm the camera slowly, to avoid condensation forming.

Keep your batteries warm, in cold weather your batteries won’t last long. Carry a spare if you have one.

Dress appropriately, with gloves and non slippy and warm shoes.
