Antarctica expedition in the 70's & 80's
I worked in the Dry Valleys of the Antarctic for 2 summers, in 78/79 and in 81/82.
I worked as a hydrology technician, measuring glacier mass balance and monitored the Onyx River flowed from melt water of small glaciers in the Wright Valley. It only flowed for about 6-8 weeks of the year when it got warmer in the summer.
The Wright Valley is named for Sir Charles Wright, who carried out numerous experiments and observations in Antarctica on the physics of ice and snow, gravity, the aurora and magnetism, he also assisted in meteorology.
The valley is the central one of the three large Dry Valleys in the Transantarctic Mountains. The Onyx River in the Wright Valley is the longest river in Antarctica.
Here are some images from my trips there.
